Course Goal:
To enable participants to locate, identify, preserve, and evaluate evidence commonly found at the scene of traffic crashes.
Course Objectives:
1) Locate and identify evidence from crash scene vehicles and the roadway
2) Preserve and process that evidence using the following methods: ·Field sketches ·Triangulation/Baseline ·Measurement data sheets ·Photographs
3) Organize collected evidence for the case file and class presentation
4) Perform a variety of mathematical formulas, including: *Speed *Velocity *Time *Distance
Methodologies:
The course employs lecture, group discussion, demonstration, and practical exercises.
Course Requirements:
Attendance is expected at all course sessions and satisfactory completion of practical exercises must be accomplished. A minimum, or higher, course score is required to earn a certificate of completion.
Special Concerns:
This is the first of three classes that provides the opportunity to earn a certificate in crash reconstruction, which may be helpful in court (see Rule 702). Students should have available for class traffic crash investigation equipment: 25’/100’/300’tapes, line/line level, hammer/masonry nails, chalk/lumber crayons, digital camera, and safety equipment. You will need a scientific calculator (a basic one such as a TI-30), a binder, and pencils/eraser on day one. The textbook used is IPTM’s Training and Reference Manual for Traffic Crash Investigation by Rivers (these are loaned to students).
NOTE:
1) This course is FEE EXEMPT for N.C. Law Enforcement. A fee will be charged for out-of-state law enforcement.
2) Out of professional courtesy to others, if you register for a course and cannot attend, please let us know as soon as possible. We can then offer those on the stand-by list an opportunity to attend.
