December 4, 2019 – Every year, the North Carolina Community Colleges system reports on how successful each of its 58 community colleges performed over an academic year. In the recent posting of this annual report, Davidson County Community College ranked in the top five colleges in the state across seven of the report’s key performance measures.
Out of the report’s seven measures, DCCC exceeded the state’s excellence level in four measures for the 2017-2018 academic year. These measures included Basic Skills Progress, Credit English Success, Credit Math Success and Licensure Pass Rate Index.
The college also received above college average scores in the remaining three measures of First Year Progression, Curriculum Completion Rate and Transfer Performance.
“These seven measures tell the story of how successful students are throughout their community college journey,” Dr. Susan Burleson, vice president of Davie Campuses and Institutional Effectiveness, said. “We were only one of five institutions in the state to receive excellence level in four or more categories, and one of four to receive nothing below the above college average level. Combining those, DCCC was only one of two to do both.”
The performance measures target those key moments in the academic journey of a community college student. Some measures deal with success in foundational courses, such as English and Math, while others measure the success of completing programs and reaching desired outcomes, such as transfer performance and licensure pass rate.
“Reaching such high levels of performance can only be achieved when students receive the supports and educational experiences necessary to ensure that they are successful,” Vice President of Academic Affairs Dr. Margaret Annunziata said. “It is through the work of our outstanding faculty and staff that DCCC has been able to achieve these outcomes.”
In addition to tracking progress in how colleges are performing relative to these measures, state performance-based funding is allocated to colleges to support excellence and promote ongoing improvements in the best interest of their students.
“These are powerful numbers, but the work isn’t done,” Burleson said. “It’s our job to continue to improve, not for the numbers, but for each individual student to see their own success.”
