Institutional Grants

The Institutional Grants Office at Davidson-Davie Community College collaborates with faculty and staff of the College and Davidson-Davie Foundation to secure competitive grant funding from external funding sources. Efforts are focused on winning grant awards that will support Davidson-Davie’s mission, values and vision, and meet the goals and priorities of each program and service area. The Grants Office supports the grant submission activities of the College’s faculty and staff through all stages of grant development, from initial planning through proposal submission. Since the Grants Office at Davidson-Davie was established in August 2003, competitive grant funding of over $14 million has been awarded to the College. From August 2003 through June 30, 2012, an average of $1.4 million per year in external funding has been secured to support student programs, services and scholarships, and another $2.2 million is already committed through 2014-2015.

These funds, and the benefits afforded by the grant funding, would not be possible without the generosity of partners and exemplary efforts of the College’s leadership team, faculty and staff.

Federal Title III Grant Project Moves Forward

Faculty and staff across campus have been working tirelessly over the summer to meet the Year One goals of the $2.25 million federal Title III grant that Davidson-Davie was proud to announce last October.

Recent Awards

Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation

Completion by Design  A five-year investment that will enable groups of community college campuses within states to collaborate on the design and implementation of a model pathway to completion. 

Total award: $4.3 million
August 1, 2012 – June 30, 2015

Following a two-year planning grant awarded in 2010, the five NC community colleges that comprise the “NC cadre” for the Completion by Design initiative performed campus-based assessments and piloted a set of proven and promising practices to design a pathway to promote student completion/graduation. The new three-year implementation grant award provides resources to scale-up the set of practices into a model pathway to completion. Community colleges participating in NC are Guilford Tech (lead college), Central Piedmont, Davidson, Martin, and Wake Tech. The NC System Office is also actively engaged as a partner in the initiative, advocating for changes in policy at the state level.

Two cadres of community colleges, one in Florida and another in Ohio are also implementing projects as grantees of the Gates’ Completion by Design initiative. The goal of Completion by Design is to develop proven model pathways to accelerate student completion, which may then be scaled-up throughout community colleges across the country.

Golden LEAF Foundation

Mid-Skills Workforce Training Initiative Consortium proposal to expand regional Advanced Manufacturing job training and student recruitment in a coordinated systematic and sustainable fashion to meet employer demand.

Davidson-Davie share $175,000 to purchase two portable computer-numeric control machines: a 5-axis, vertical milling machine, and a lathe, as well as funding for expenses of credentialing faculty and students for industry-recognized, third-party credentials.

U.S. Department of Labor

TAA Community College and Career Training (TAACCCT)  The North Carolina Advanced Manufacturing Alliance – Awarded in Oct. 2011. Sub-award as members of a consortium proposal developed by Robeson Community College. The project involves 10 community college partners in 17 counties, representing 11 of the 13 Congressional Districts in the state.

October 1, 2011 – September 30, 2014

Strategies will be implemented to address gaps in current education and training programs in advanced manufacturing including:

  • Initial skills assessment.
  • Flexible, on-demand learning options.
  • Redesigned, compressed and self-paced developmental education.
  • Increased student support via a dedicated Success Manager.
  • Mobile learning options through online courses, educational applications, tablet computing;
  • student internships.
  • Career pathways from high school to college.
  • An online repository via iTunes U sites at 5 Alliance institutions which will include digital content, courses, self-help and manufacturing career guidance all free of charge.

Community Colleges Participating: Robeson, Beaufort, Craven, Fayetteville, Nash, Edgecombe, Davidson, Surry, Haywood and Asheville-Buncombe.

NC Institute of Museum and Library and Services (IMLS)

Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA)   $100,000 to Cape Fear Community College (lead) and Davidson-Davie Community College. The two college consortium will select, install, and implement a new shared Integrated Library System (ILS) for the colleges’ libraries. LSTA funds will be used to purchase software, hardware, and other equipment needed to successfully implement the new ILS and to train approximately 30 library staff on the use of the new system.
